NGAYONG ARAW
FROM A FAN GIRL’S POV: HOW DOES IT FEEL LIKE INTERVIEWING ALDEN RICHARDS
March 28, 2016
(This is a very long blog post. I really wanted this post to be as detailed as possible because I would like to go back to this moment and relive every memory and the happiness I felt over and over again in the future. Because this experience, as Maine Mendoza used to say, is one for the books.:))
We left for Edmonton from Saskatoon at exactly 3:00am for the Meet and Greet with Alden Richards, Rocco Nacino and Kim Idol with my brother, sister, sister-in-law, and my 9-month old niece at 12:00pm. The weather didn’t look nice, the road was covered with snow and we had to go very slow. It was actually scary and all I thought was “oh god… the things I do for love.” Haha.
I texted Nanay Lydia, the producer of Bae in the City regarding the whereabouts of Alden and the rest of the team as I was hoping I can also welcome them at the airport with the other fans. But as expected, I wasn’t able to make it, Alden and the team arrived already in Edmonton from Winnipeg. Nanay Lydia was just so nice to give me some updates even if she didn’t know me personally, she even sent me a selfie of him and Alden while they were in the limousine. Yes, may pa-limousine si Nanay Lydia. When I saw her picture with Alden, my heart was beating so fast, I became so much more excited.
We arrived at Edmonton at around 10:00am. I texted Nanay Lydia and she said the three stars would arrive at around 1:00pm because they wanted to take a nap for an hour or two.
At that moment, I was thinking if I can really do the interview. The day before, I got a Facebook message from GMA Pinoy TV advising me that they have already coordinated with their consultant, Ms. Faye Nalicat, regarding my interview request. From those exchanges of messages among myself, GMA Pinoy TV and Ms. Faye, it sounded like an interview with Alden Richards was possible. I was so excited but nervous at the same time. I was asking myself, “Can I really interview an Alden Richards?” I had my interview questions ready the night before and have been practicing my lines during our road trip to Edmonton. When GMA arrived at Palabok House, I got a message from Ms. Faye asking where I was. To be honest, I felt so nervous. I really have no idea what to expect. When I met Ms. Faye, I didn’t know she was very pretty! Haha. She told me an interview might not be possible after the meet and greet due to time constraints. I was actually somehow expecting it just by seeing the crowd and realizing that Alden must have been very tired already because they just came from Winnipeg. And to be very very honest, at that point, I have already given up the whole interview thing. I told to myself that I will just enjoy the concert and see Alden maybe for an autograph signing – if ever there would be one.
We ate a delicious buffet lunch but I can’t eat very well, I had a lot of things going on in my mind. At around 1:30pm, the crowd suddenly went wild. It was the moment everyone has been eagerly waiting for – the “Pambansang Bae” has finally arrived.
I was just there – with a heart pounding so fast, watching as he entered the room. Everyone was shouting their lungs out, and I was just there, being so silent and smiling the whole time I was looking at him. I never uttered a word, my sister even tapped me at my back and asked me if I was okay. Haha. Alden and the whole Bae in the City Team had their lunch first before the meet and greet. We can all see them as they eat – I couldn’t believe at that time that Alden was there, in the same room as I was. It felt like my favourite fiction character finally came to life. It felt surreal, it was very unbelievable. While Alden and the team were eating, God Gave Me You was playing on the TV. I can’t help but think how unbelievable it was to see that same person on TV eating just a few inches away from me. There were really not a lot of security or bouncers around that I can really walk my way through a spot near him, where I could see his face so clearly. But I refused to do so, the host said to give them time to eat peacefully and to not take any pictures as a sign of respect. I only took his pictures from afar because I can’t help it. And yes, I know that was overacting – but hey, your biggest crush in the world was there in front of your very eyes, what can you expect?
Nanay Lydia also shared that while they were having lunch with Alden and the team, she found out that Alden really likes fish and when she offered him rice, he refused. He said he doesn’t eat too much rice para pampawala ng bilbil. Haha. Seriously? Kung may bilbil siya, paano na lang ako? Isang malaking bilbil na nagkatawang tao? Haha.
And then about half an hour or so, Alden, Rocco and Kim Idol stood up and moved to the “meet and greet table” or however you would like to call it. Again, the crowd went wild as they watch every Alden’s moves. And then again, I was just there at the corner, silently wa tching him while smiling and while being “tulaley“. I was like an old friend or his parent watching him from afar while being so proud – alam mo ‘yun? Haha. A few minutes after all the three of them have spoken to the fans, it was time for pictures! I was with my brother, sister, sister-in-law and my 9 year old niece and all I ever wanted to do was to have our family picture taken with him. I was patiently waiting for our turn when suddenly the host called “Pinoy Channel Saskatchewan” as one of the media partners of the event who will be taking a picture with Alden, Kim Idol and Rocco. I didn’t know we were recognized as such, huge thanks to Ms. Faye! I rushed my way to the front. As I am the only one from Pinoy Channel, that meant I will have a “solo” picture with the three of them. As I walked towards Alden, I don’t know but I felt so shy. I was like a high school student looking at her crush. Haha. I can’t even touch him… and I wasn’t even able to say “Hi!” I can only lean close to him and that’s it. I wonder how the other girls can hug and kiss him like nobody’s business. Haha.
See? It’s like I just positioned myself behind him like one of those GMA standees. But hey, it was still awesome and Alden was absolutely, definitely, crazily handsome. Haha.
Now it’s time for picture taking with the fans. As I have mentioned earlier, I was with my brother, sister, sister-in-law and my 9-month-old niece (paulit-ulit?). Okay, I will share a secret since the event is now over. I only had two VIP tickets because my brother and sister-in-law didn’t really plan to watch the concert, those two tickets were only for myself and my sister. I went in to the venue with my brother because I asked him to be my cameraman when I interview Alden. Two of the staff knew that we were from Saskatoon (a 7 hour drive from Edmonton) and that my sister-in-law, my sister and my baby niece were all inside the car. They initially refused to let them in since the venue was not that big and there were only so much space for ticket holders. I saw two of the staff taking a peak at our car every now and then as if hindi sila mapakali. Then moments later one of them came up to me and said “sige papasukin mo na sila, kawawa naman yung baby. Tabi-tabi na lang kayo at wag na lang kayong maingay.” I knew that might be wrong as the space might have been for other ticket holders, but I can’t help but think how nice of them to think that way. I wasn’t really expecting that. Because of them, all of us got the chance to meet Alden. I hope I got their names, but I was able to personally say a sincere thank you to them.smile emoticon
After the long wait, it was our turn to take a picture with the three stars. It was my second attempt to get close to him, so I wanted to have a very very little conversation with him.
Me: Hi Alden! Pwede pakibuhat si baby?
Alden: Hi baby!
Then without a second thought he carried my niece. Do you ever have that feeling when you can’t believe that you’re actually talking to someone you thought you will never ever meet? It was that feeling. I also didn’t want to miss the chance to somewhat “touch” him. Haha. So I did – on his shoulders. Yes, I just held him on his shoulders. I can’t really gather the strength to extend my arms and wrap them around Alden’s neck, which others did effortlessly, ‘yung kebs lang. I was so shy, as in sobrang nahihiya talaga ko nang bongga!
Before I went to the concert, one of my goals was to take a picture with Alden while he’s carrying my niece, so it would look like a “pemily” picture. Haha. And my caption would be “How do you see yourself in 5 years?” If you’re one of my Facebook friends, you would have seen my post already. And yes, it was all planned. Lol.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take a picture with just the three of us, so I had to crop our group picture – which wasn’t bad. I guess it worked quite well. Haha.
After our picture taking, it’s time to take my niece back, syempre. We had this little conversation again:
Me: Sige sa’yo na si baby. Ikaw na mag-alaga diyan ha? Pagod na kami eh.
Alden: Sige po (with a smile and malalim na dimples)
It was just that, but my heart flattered for a bit.smile emoticon
Aminin, this made you smile!😀
Just want to share this too, the other side of the selfie with the Bae in the City stars:
Then a selfie with Mr. Leysam Sanciangco, Alden’s handsome and very nice handler. Plus, he followed me on Instagram!
And of course, a selfie with Alden and team’s limousine, featuring my niece and a Rogelio. Haha.
The gates were already opened by 5pm, but we were really tired and decided to come at 6pm since we have our assigned seats anyway. An hour or so later I didn’t hear anything from Ms. Faye and so I have totally given up on the interview (‘yung mas lalo pa kong sumuko at this point). So I just texted her asking if I can just ask for video greetings for Pinoy Channel, which at that point I was expecting I won’t also get since they were so busy and Ms. Faye also mentioned during our first meeting that Alden was also tired already. On my way to the washroom I saw Ms. Faye going towards my direction and because I was thinking that she can’t really help me anymore with the interview, I was planning to pretend as if I didn’t see her so she won’t feel awkward when she sees me. But she was the one who called me and asked me if I have a gadget (a video camera) and that I should just stand by. She looked like she was in a hurry and I thought that maybe she was just being nice to me to say that, to make me feel that she was not ignoring me. I don’t know, but I felt like GMA Pinoy TV will not take me seriously, especially Alden Richards and his team because – hello? “GMA ‘yun, and si Alden Richards ‘yun, hindi naman ko basta-basta makakalapit.” I was just a newbie interviewer, I didn’t have prior interview experience, I didn’t even have experience hosting for TV.
It was about 8pm already, and the show has started with some appreciation of the sponsors and a production number. I just decided to not think about the interview any more and just enjoy the concert.
Then I heard my phone rang – Ms. Faye was calling me. My first thought was maybe she would tell me that the interview wasn’t really possible so I initially thought to ignore the call because it was so noisy, too. The audience were cheering out loud because the show has just started as I have mentioned. I know, I was so negative – it’s just because I really didn’t want to be so disappointed so I always expect for the worst, I don’t know but that’s just how I am.

The Interview
To my surprise, as in bonggang surprise, Ms. Faye told me she’s waiting for me near the backstage area and that I have only a few minutes for the interview so I needed to hurry. I became so nervous, I was in a panic mode already. I didn’t even bring any make-up kasi nga I thought wala nang interview. Good thing I have my interview questions on my phone, but my heart was pounding really fast, and I believe so was my sister’s. Ms. Faye told us to wait in the kitchen for a bit. It was quite cold in that kitchen and moments later Ms. Faye and Sir Daryl Zamora, who also works for GMA with Alden, came to pick us up. They told us that we can just go backstage and wait there instead because it was cold in the kitchen. What’s nice about them was they were even apologetic that they had us waiting in that cold place. I admit I didn’t really have a nice impression of the people working for the network giants because of the “bad stuff” I heard about them on the news, social media and on some movies or dramas, lalo na kapag may kailangan ka sa kanila, you know what I mean? But yeah, they were so nice, and made me change my mind about people in show business industry. I really hope everyone’s just like them.
And then my favourite part of the day started. Ms. Faye and Sir Daryl told us to sit down on those two chairs backstage – and there was Alden Richards – the person that everyone behind the stage curtains have been dying to see. I saw him and Rocco Nacino being their natural selves, being just like ordinary people. And the weird part was? I really didn’t feel anything at all – I mean, I felt so calm as if I was just looking at one of my guy friends. Alden didn’t have his make up on, his hair wasn’t shining unlike what I usually see on TV. He was having a conversation with Sir Resty, a travel agent and one of the sponsors of Bae in the City, regarding a flight itinerary. I can really here everything they’re talking about, I can here Alden’s voice. There might be some personal details he gave out (I don’t know), but I chose not to listen. I promise and I swear to God I really didn’t listen. I was just looking at my phone trying to memorize some lines. I only knew about their topic because Ms. Faye and Mama Ten told me.
When I saw Alden, it’s as if he was that someone you would just voluntarily give your respect to -without him even asking for it, or making an effort to earn it.
I also didn’t look at him the entire time we were sitting in the room, I didn’t want him to feel awkward. I only took this photo and that’s it – while my sister couldn’t help it. She was just looking at him almost the entire time we were sitting there, and then I think Alden finally noticed and he smiled first to my sister, and my sister felt so kilig and of course, she smiled back.
Kim Idol was currently performing when we were backstage and we can hear the people shouting out loud everytime Kim Idol would mention Alden’s na me. While my sister and I were there – just a few inches away from him. I felt very lucky and thankful.
After 5 minutes or so, some of the event staff noticed us, asking why we were there. And they were asking us so politely, hindi ‘yung exsaheradang “anong ginagawa niyo diyan?!” I also felt like we shouldn’t be there since Alden might be giving some personal information that we could have overheard, so they politely asked us to move to the very backstage. Mama Ten told us “pasensya na ha, may inaasikaso pa kasi tungkol sa itinerary. Tawagin namin kayo kapag tapos na.” I honestly didn’t know that was Mama Ten!! I only heard about him through Twitter mentions, but he really looked so familiar. Mabait talaga si Mama Ten, I have proven that.
Meanwhile, while waiting for Alden, Rocco went backstage where we were, parang medyo nagpapractice siya ng sayaw niya nang kaunti. He was very nice and very gwapo! We asked for a picture with him and he said yes with a very cute smile.smile emoticon
We only stayed backstage with the other dancers for about three minutes and Ms. Faye told us that I can get the video greetings from Rocco for now while we’re waiting for Alden. Rocco was a very nice guy, walang kahangin-hangin. He was just smiling to me and my sister everytime he sees us. And then he did the video greetings for Pinoy Channel’s first anniversary with, again, a smile.
Isn’t he cute?:) And also, because our picture with him earlier was madilim, I asked him for another picture/selfie.
Thank you so much, Rocco! You are one kind, handsome, bubbly man! You deserve all the blessings coming your way!:)
Shortly after Rocco’s video greetings, Alden was finally done talking to Sir Resty. He went straight to Mama Ten and held him on his waist, while telling him something “Ma, okay na, may stop over daw sa Korea ng 2 hours. Pwede mamili (shopping)”. Then while still holding Mama Ten’s waist, Mama Ten said something that I didn’t hear and Alden jokingly – or in a palambing way – slapped Mama Ten as he said “pwede nga mamili.” I just find that scene cute. Alden was like a child telling some good news to his mom.smile emoticon
And then he approached us and Ms. Faye explained that we will interview him. I guess he thought at first we were just a part of the event staff. Then he asked me, in a soft, medyo malambing na voice, “Ano ba ‘yung mga tanong?” Then I showed him my phone and he was scrolling it. At that moment, as one of his fan girls, that scene would have made me crazy. But he has this aura when he was just being his natural self that will make you feel as if he wasn’t a big star, as if he’s just an ordinary person. I was so calm at that moment, my heart wasn’t even thumping so fast unlike before I met him.
Then we positioned ourselves for the interview but I couldn’t seem to find a perfect position, and he realized I was wanting to have the GMA Pinoy TV as the background. He asked, “do you want that (the GMA standee) to be the background?” Sabi ko, “oo sana” and then he said “Sige tara let’s move there.” I am not sure if that was natural pero soft and malambing talaga ‘yung voice niya. While my sister was fixing the camera, Alden told Mama Ten who was standing on the other side of the room, “Ma, may nakuha na kami 4,600.” I knew he was talking about the price of a plane ticket, and I unconsciously commented “hala ang mahal!” I even covered my mouth after I said that because I realized nakakahiya naman ako, sumasali ako sa usapan nila. But he immediately looked at me and he said “hindi, tatlo naman kasi ‘yun” and Sir Daryl also told me, “oo tatlo na ‘yun tsaka business class pa.” Then I felt as if I was a part of their group. Alden told that to me as if I am just one of his friends, ‘yung napaka-natural lang and I didn’t really feel the famous, phenomenal Alden Richards at all. It was as if I was just having a conversation with a friend. Sobrang bait po talaga ni Alden Richards, as in… sobra.smile emoticon
So the interview started. To my surprise, I didn’t really feel nervous knowing that Alden was just beside me. And as I have mentioned, it was my first time interviewing a person on TV and how lucky and blessed I was to be doing that with Alden. Again, to my surprise, he answered my questions very well, as in ang hahaba ng mga sagot niya which I wasn’t really expecting because I thought he might be really tired and his brain might just really want to rest. I only have five or six questions, and the interview lasted for about 3.5 minutes and I felt it was way longer than that. The interview went very well, although I looked very hagardo versoza because like I said, I really wasn’t expecting for the interview to happen. After the interview, I was so happy to ask him, “pwede paselfie?” He said, “oo naman, sige“. During the meet and greet, selfies were not allowed so I really thought I won’t ever have the chance to take a selfie with him. So just imagine how happy I was when that happened
I usually smile on camera with my teeth showing, but for some reason I can’t really seem to do that when I was with Alden. I don’t know why. Haha. I told him, “pwede picture din kayo ng sister ko?” Then he said, “ay magkapatid pala kayo” and then I reminded him, “kami ‘yung nagpabuhat sa’yo ng baby kanina.” And he said, “ah kayo pala yung may baby? Kaninong baby ‘yun?” My sister said, “sa kuya namin.” And then they smiled for the camera. I just couldn’t believe I was having that casual conversation with someone whom I was only seeing on TV and have been tweeting about since Kalyeserye started in July 2015.
It was time to go when my sister told him, “fan na fan ka niya!” (she meant “fan na fan mo siya“, nastarstruck din siguro si sister haha) while pointing at me. And then I was so surprised because Alden rubbed my elbow while telling me, “uyy talaga? Salamat!” I was just very happy. Himasin ba naman ako sa siko! Haha. I didn’t even hug him. I was so shy. I felt like hugging him would have been easy if I didn’t have a crush on him. My sister and I thanked him in the end, and he was also saying “thank you din” and “you’re welcome“. His smile was there the entire time we were with him. I just proved that he was so humble and kind that’s why almost everyone was just very happy to work with him, just look at Kim Idol’s Instagram. After our interview he sat down and seconds later someone was already doing his make-up. I was about to go back to ask for a video greeting but I just said, “pagod na siya, hayaan na natin” and the interview was way more important and already so much of a blessing.

After my sister and I went out of the backstage and walked our way back to our seats, that’s when everything started to sink in to me- as in, lahat, immediately. I really wanted to shout but I can’t so I slightly jumped while I have my arms wrapped around my sister’s shoulders. I immediately looked at our selfies even we were only halfway to our seats and I wanted to faint. Haha. Just kidding, I was so happy I didn’t know what to do.
Then Rocco performed and again, the crowd, especially the ladies, went wild. To be very honest, I really didn’t know who Rocco Nacino was but after meeting him, I understood why a lot of people also like him, and I immediately become a fan. His dance moves were superb, I was so impressed! I am now looking forward to watching his shows and upcoming projects.smile emoticon
An hour after, it was Alden’s turn to make everyone feel so kilig. He was now wearing his makeup and his hair was now shining. As I mentioned earlier, he didn’t have any make up on while we were with him backstage. But you know what? For me he looked more perfect with his little imperfections. Now that I got the chance to see the “natural side” of Tisoy, I would say that I respect him and I admire him more – and I am looking forward to seeing more of the “RJ Faulkerson side” in the future.
I hugged Ms. Faye after because I just can’t thank her enough. She could have just ignored me, and GMA Pinoy TV could just have taken my request for granted. But they really went our of their way to help me in getting this interview, to make this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity possible, much more like a dream came true.
As usual, I was just quiet while watching him perform. It might sound cheesy but it was like despite all of the noises, all of the yelling and shouting because of kilig from the audience, I can only hear him voice. I was also asking myself, “siya ba talaga ‘yung nakausap ko kanina?” because I was that amazed. I was so focused to him, I even didn’t take a lot of pictures and videos and just let my sister do that for me. Haha.
And I understand more why Alden is so blessed. In everything he does, he makes sure that he put God first, that he offers everything to Him. The way he sang “How Great is Our God” was so heartfelt, and while listening to him you just know that he was singing it from his heart, he was so grateful. He is such a wonderful person with an extremely beautiful heart.
It was a very great show , Kim Idol’s performance had everyone laughing so hard, and I never had that laugh in a while. He also shared what he’s currently going through, a fight that he’s trying his best to battle with, but still he was able to inspire us and to make us realize that life is still wonderful and worthwhile. I am very lucky and blessed to have watched Kim Idol.
After the spectacular show, it was time for another meet and greet. Seriously, the moment I saw the line up of people wanting to meet him, I kind of felt bad because I have been following almost all Twitter and Instagram posts about his Canada tour so I know how tired he was. Just take a look at this picture and you’ll know what I mean.
That line-up was just one part of the hall, there were way more people in line from the other side. I know he was tired, but I also know that he was grateful to everyone and it also makes him happy to see how many people look up to him, how many of us love him. So I ended up still falling in line to have his signatures on my albums and magazines. Haha. I didn’t even realize how many hours we fell in line, but I think it went by pretty quick – or because I was just busy with my chikahan with other AlDub fans in the line?
After holding on to these magazines and albums for a while, they’re finally all signed! Hopefully, his “other half” would also be able to sign them in the future.smile emoticon
After our turn for autograph signing, I saw Ms. Faye and she called me. I was just surprised when she gave me a complimentary copy of Alden’s album and a bin full of freebies from Shaw TV. I should be the one giving her something because she let me experience something that I would treasure in my lifetime, I just felt like I received too much from her that day… and I could’t be more thankful enough.
And of course, I didn’t miss the chance to take a selfie with her!
Thank you so much, Ms. Faye! I really hope you can read this.smile emoticon
My family and I stayed for a couple more days in Edmonton to tour the city, and we didn’t realize it’s very beautiful! I went back to Saskatoon feeling so happy not just for myself, but for my Pinoy Channel team as well. We are celebrating our first anniversary and it was so special because Alden and Rocco will make their appearances on our April episode. How lovely is that? Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would meet all the people I met that day, it was very special, and everything went well so perfectly.
I would like to thank GMA Pinoy TV, Rocco Nacino, Kim Idol, Ms. Faye Nalicat, Nanay Lydia Jimenez, Mama Ten, Sir Daryl Zamora, Sir Leysam Sanciangco and the other event staff of Bae in the City who worked very hard and looked after all of us very well. Thank you so much po!
And of course, Alden – maraming salamat. You did not only make me happy, but also our kababayans in Saskatoon who would witness your interview. Before this blog has been posted, there was an article on a local Philippine tabloid saying negative things about you and your staff. It was very very hard to believe that it was true, and the producers even denied those claims. With all the love that you get, I really hope and pray that you will not be affected by all the false accusations they throw at you. Please also trust that no matter what happens, the whole AlDub Nation and of course, the Aldenatics will always support and love you unconditionally. It was a great pleasure meeting you.
Additional Chika
I spoke with Nanay Lydia last Monday for over an hour talking about Alden and Bae in the City. She was with Alden and the rest of the Bae in the City team in Vancouver so she and Alden were able to spent some chikahan moments together. I mentioned earlier that Alden was talking to Sir Resty about a flight itinerary. I learned from Nanay Lydia that he was trying to change his flight so that he would be able to make it to an Easter Sunday mass in Vancouver. He didn’t want to miss it, otherwise he would be just in the plane on an Easter Sunday. So tell me, how can you not have too much admiration for such a guy? Another one – remember the “mystery girl” on Alden’s concert in Antipolo? You must have known this but Nanay Lydia also shared that Alden admitted it was really Maine. He said Maine really went there to support him. I decided to share this because I don’t think this is a secret anymore. I saw a tweet confirming it was Maine from one of the big AlDub fan accounts on Twitter. But the confirmation coming directly from Alden made it million times more kilig! He could have denied it, but he didn’t – and I find that special and very sweet.smile emoticon And when Nanay Lydia asked, “kayo na ba ni Maine?” He just smiled. Not sure what’s the meaning of that, but we’re happy to know they’re both happy, right, AlDub/MaiChard Nation?
If you’re still reading this blog, thank you for your patience and please know that I really appreciate your time reading this. And I hope you enjoyed my story! smile emoticon Maraming salamat po. *pabebe wave*
Love,
Hazel
P.S. I remember another one – when Alden just smiled when asked “kayo na ba ni Maine,” our favourite Nanay Lydia asked, “pero gusto mo siya?”
He said… “Opo“.
